Van Hool Recalls 2011-2012 Motorcoaches Due to Alternator Fire Risk
Van Hool is recalling 138 motorcoaches because missing ground cables on the alternator may cause overheating and a potential vehicle fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a potential vehicle fire due to overheating alternator components, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural/electrical defects posing a high risk of harm.
Plain-English summary
Van Hool N.V. is recalling certain model year 2011 and 2012 C2045, and model year 2011 T2140 and T2145 motorcoaches. These vehicles were manufactured between September 2010 and September 2011 and are equipped with a Daimler DD13 engine. The recall affects 138 units that were built without ground cables installed on the Prestolite AC172 alternators.
The defect involves internal corrosion within the alternator components, which may cause them to overheat. If the alternator overheats, the components may melt, potentially resulting in smoke and creating a risk of a vehicle fire.
Van Hool, through their US agent ABC Bus, Inc., will notify owners. Dealers will add external ground cables to the alternators free of charge. The safety recall began on December 5, 2012. Owners may contact the warranty administrator for ABC Bus, Inc. toll-free at 1-877-427-7278 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
