Caterpillar Recalls CT660 Trucks Due to Brake Bracket Fracture Risk
Caterpillar is recalling 2012-2013 CT660 trucks because brake S-cam brackets may fracture, potentially causing the vehicle to pull or increase stopping distance.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake bracket fracture) that can lead to loss of braking control, meeting the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Caterpillar Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 CT660 trucks manufactured between August 2011 and August 2012. The recall affects vehicles equipped with specific Reduced Stopping Distance (RSD) brake linings and front air S-cam brakes. In these vehicles, the brake S-cam brackets may fracture.
A fractured S-cam bracket can result in an inoperative brake on the affected wheel. This failure may cause the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly during braking or increase the stopping distance, which may increase the risk of a crash.
Caterpillar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the S-cam brake assemblies with reinforced units free of charge. The recall began on April 11, 2014. Owners may contact Caterpillar at 1-888-614-4328 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
