Caterpillar CT660 Trucks Recalled for Brake Valve Leak Risk
Caterpillar is recalling 2012-2013 CT660 trucks because cold weather may cause brake valves to leak, leading to continuous braking, overheating, or loss of control.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that can lead to loss of vehicle control, fire, and increased crash risk, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Caterpillar Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 CT660 commercial trucks manufactured between December 2, 2010, and January 26, 2012. These vehicles are equipped with Bendix ATR-6 traction relay valves. The recall affects 104 units.
In extremely cold conditions, these specific relay valves may develop internal leakage. This leakage can cause air pressure to be delivered to the primary or secondary brakes, resulting in continuous brake application. This unexpected braking can cause the brakes to overheat and potentially lead to a fire. Additionally, it can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The brakes may also apply without illuminating the brake lights, failing to warn other drivers.
Caterpillar will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. Owners may contact Caterpillar at 309-675-5658 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
