Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured between January 8, 2013, and August 20, 2013. The recall involves approximately 90,981 vehicles. The defect is caused by a disruption of computer communications and loose alternator ground wires, which can lead to random illumination of warning lights, loss of instrument cluster illumination, and the loss of anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) functions.
The loss of ABS and ESC functions reduces the driver's ability to control the vehicle and prevents the dashboard from warning drivers of brake system failures. These conditions increase the risk of a crash and cause the vehicles to fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 101 and No. 126.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS and instrument cluster module software and tighten the alternator ground wire free of charge. The recall began on November 19, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
