Recreation by Design Recalls 2013 Travel Trailers Due to Awning Motor Defect
Recreation by Design is recalling 2013 Monte Carlo, Royal Travel, and North American travel trailers because a damaged awning motor may cause the awning to unfurl unexpectedly, increasing injury or crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury or a vehicle crash is possible, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities.
Plain-English summary
Recreation by Design is recalling certain model year 2013 Monte Carlo, Royal Travel, and North American travel trailers. The affected models include the Monte Carlo 35 SC FW, 37 PM, 37 SC, 40 SC FW, 43 SC FW, 44 PM, 44 SC, 44 SC FW, and 52 SC FW; the Royal Travel 39 SC and 42 SC; and the North American 36 SC and 44 PM.
The recall is due to a defect in the Dometic-brand awning motor. If the awning installation sequence was not completely followed, the motor may become damaged. If this damage occurs, the awning can unfurl unexpectedly while the trailer is at rest or in transit, which increases the risk of personal injury or a vehicle crash.
Owners are instructed not to drive their vehicles until repairs can be performed. Recreation by Design will notify owners, and Dometic staff will replace the affected motors with a design that is not subject to an out-of-sequence installation error. The recall began on September 9, 2013. Owners may contact Recreation by Design at 1-800-999-1902 or Dometic at 1-888-447-0003 for more information.
