Subaru Recalls 2014 Forester Vehicles Due to Curling Floor Mats

Subaru is recalling 2014 Forester vehicles because floor mats may curl and interfere with pedals, posing a crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a defect that may interfere with brake or accelerator pedals, potentially resulting in very high vehicle speeds and crashes, which aligns with the rubric criterion for significant injury or property-damage reports.

Plain-English summary

Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2014 Forester vehicles manufactured between January 2013 and March 2013. The recall involves 10,137 vehicles where the backing for the carpeted floor mats was not manufactured to specification.

As a result of the defect, the floor mats may curl when exposed to heat. Curling of the driver-side floor mat could distract the driver and/or interfere with the proper operation of the vehicle's clutch, brake, and accelerator pedals. Interference with the brake or accelerator pedals may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash.

Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace each of the vehicle's four carpeted floor mats with new ones at no charge. Subaru issued an interim notification in April 2013, and notification that the remedy is available was mailed to owners on June 5, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
