What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (weld fracture) that could cause component separation, posing a risk of personal injury and property damage, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Altec Industries, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Digger Derrick vehicles equipped with a PENGO digger extension shaft. The recall involves 2,193 vehicles. The defect is located in the base material at the weld joint, which may result in a stress fracture through the applied weld of the drive hub to the hex bar material.
The stress fracture could cause the extension shaft to separate from the drive hub when digging, increasing the risk of personal injury and/or property damage.
Altec will notify owners and inspect the PENGO digger extension shaft, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The safety recall began on October 12, 2012. Owners may contact Altec Industries at 1-877-462-5832 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
