ZAP is recalling 2008 Xebra electric motorcycles because they fail to meet federal braking distance requirements, increasing the risk of a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (braking system) that increases the risk of a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, aligning with the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Qingqi Group Motorcycle Co., Ltd., through its designated agent ZAP USA, is recalling certain model year 2008 ZAP Xebra all-electric motorcycles. The vehicles were manufactured between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2008. This recall supersedes safety recall 09V-177.
The recalled vehicles fail to conform to the braking distance requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 122, "Motorcycle Brake Systems." As a result, these vehicles take longer distances to stop, which increases the risk of a vehicle crash.
ZAP will notify owners, and ZAP dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall began on October 8, 2012. Owners may contact ZAP at 1-707-525-8658 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
