2012 Tiffin Phaeton Recalled for Air Brake System Non-Compliance

Tiffin Motorhomes is recalling two 2012 Phaeton recreational vehicles because their air brake systems do not meet federal safety standards for park brakes.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (air brake system non-compliance) with a potential for significant injury or property damage if the vehicle rolls away.

Plain-English summary

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is recalling two model year 2012 Phaeton recreational vehicles built on a Spartan chassis. These vehicles are equipped with 3030 brake chambers that fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 121, "Air Brake Systems," specifically regarding park brake and draw bar requirements.

The defect means the park brake may not be sufficient to hold the vehicle in place. Consequently, the vehicle could roll away and strike and injure a bystander or cause a crash without warning.

The affected vehicles have not been sold yet. Tiffin has notified the dealers currently in possession of the vehicles. Spartan dealers will install improved brake chambers prior to sale. Owners may contact Tiffin Motorhomes at 1-256-356-8661 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
