The recall addresses a defect where the transmission range sensor (TRS) may have been calibrated out of specification for reverse gear, causing the vehicle to fail compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 102 and 108.

If this condition exists, the transmission may not engage reverse, or the dashboard 'R' indicator and rear backup lamps may fail to illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse. These conditions increase the risk of a crash or a pedestrian being struck because the vehicle does not properly signal that it is reversing.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the transmission range sensor as necessary, free of charge. The safety recall began on June 11, 2012.
