What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (child restraint) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for products with potential for harm but no confirmed incidents.
Plain-English summary
Evenflo Company, Inc. is recalling certain Big Kid Factory Select booster seats, including model numbers 30911173AD, 3091967AD, 30911118AD, and 30911120D. These seats were shipped between August 6, 2012, and September 18, 2012. The affected units were originally manufactured for retail display and were not intended for sale, but they were inadvertently shipped to institutional customers such as hospitals and government agencies to be given to families. None of the affected units were sold at retail stores.
The recalled seats fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213 because they were packaged without the required instruction manual or registration card. Without the instruction manual, the seat may be used improperly. Additionally, without the registration card, owners may not be notified of future safety recalls. These conditions increase the risk of possible injury to a child in the event of a crash.
Owners can identify affected seats by a label on the back of the booster seat headrest that states: "DISPLAY ONLY – NOT INTENDED FOR SALE." Evenflo will mail a free remedy kit to owners of affected seats. The kit includes a consumer registration card, an instruction manual, and an overlabel to cover the display-only label. Notification began on October 10, 2012. Owners may contact Evenflo at 1-800-233-5921 or visit safety.evenflo.com for more information.
