Toyota Recalls Tundra Models for Tire Pressure Monitoring System Defect

Toyota is recalling 2007-2011 Tundra vehicles because the tire pressure monitoring system may not warn drivers of low tire pressure, increasing the risk of tire failure.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (tire failure leading to crash) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Toyota Tundra vehicles. The recall addresses a failure to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems." On some vehicles, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may not have been properly calibrated.

As a result, the low tire pressure warning lamp may not illuminate if the inflation pressure in one or more tires falls below the required threshold. This means drivers will not receive a warning that one or more tires are underinflated. Driving with underinflated tires increases the risk of a tire failure, which may lead to a crash.

Dealers will recalibrate the tire pressure monitoring system in accordance with the regulation free of charge. The safety recall began during July 2011. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota Customer Assistance Center toll-free at 1-800-301-6859, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Eastern Standard Time. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit safercar.gov.
