Volvo Trucks Recall VNL, VHD, and VNM Models for Brake Defect

Volvo Trucks is recalling certain 2011-2012 VNL, VHD, and 2012 VNM trucks because defective slack adjusters may crack, causing loss of braking.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that could cause a loss of braking and result in a vehicle crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 VHD and VNL trucks, as well as model year 2012 VNM trucks. These vehicles were manufactured between October 15, 2010, and January 31, 2011, and are equipped with Gunite automatic slack adjusters.

The recall is due to an incomplete "knitting" of the iron during the casting process, which can result in inadequate structural integrity of the slack adjuster housing. This defect could cause the housing to break at the handle under normal operating loads. If the slack adjusters crack under normal braking conditions, it could cause a loss of braking, potentially resulting in a vehicle crash.

Owners should contact Volvo Trucks to schedule a free replacement of the subject slack adjusters. The safety recall was expected to begin on or about August 12, 2011. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
