Plain-English summary
Double K Inc. is recalling certain Villager, Mainstreet, and Villager 158 buses equipped with Trans Air TA 73 evaporators. The affected vehicles are model years 1999 through 2006 for the Villager, 1999 through 2007 for the Mainstreet, and 2007 for the Villager 158.
The evaporator uses a power resistor to regulate blower speed. If a short occurs in the low or medium-speed circuit while the blower is in high speed, the supply voltage may feedback through the resistor to ground without drawing enough current to trip the fuse. This causes the resistor temperature to rise until it melts, which can ignite the plastic blower housing and result in a fire.
Double K, in cooperation with Trans Air, will install a thermal shutdown device in series with the speed resistors at no charge. The safety recall began in February 2011. Owners may contact Trans Air Warranty and Service Center at 1-800-673-2446 or Double K at 1-715-478-5090. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
