Coach and Equipment Phoenix Buses Recalled for Blower Fire Risk
Coach and Equipment is recalling 2005-2006 Phoenix buses equipped with specific Trans Air evaporators due to a risk of fire from an overheating resistor.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the overheating can result in a fire, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural/functional defects leading to severe hazards.
Plain-English summary
Coach and Equipment Mfg Corp. is recalling certain 2005 and 2006 Phoenix buses. The recall affects vehicles equipped with Trans Air TA 73 evaporators. The defect involves a power resistor used to regulate blower speed. If a short occurs in the low or medium-speed circuit while the blower is in high speed, the supply voltage may feedback through the resistor to ground without drawing enough current to trip the fuse.
This electrical fault can cause the resistor temperature to rise until it melts, potentially igniting the plastic blower housing to which it is mounted. The overheating can result in a fire. The safety recall began on December 29, 2010.
Owners should contact Trans Air Warranty and Service Center at 1-800-673-2446 to schedule the repair. Coach and Equipment, in cooperation with Trans Air, will install a thermal shutdown device in series with the speed resistors free of charge. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
