Startrans Transit Buses Recalled for Wheelchair Lift Restraint Belt Defect
Startrans is recalling certain 2007-2010 transit buses because the wheelchair lift restraint belt may not latch securely, posing an injury risk to users.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the restraint belt may fail to secure a lift occupant, posing a potential injury risk, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.
Plain-English summary
Startrans Bus Corporation is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2010 Candidate, Candidate II, Senator, Senator HD, President, Trolley, Senator II, and Sentinel transit buses. These vehicles were manufactured from December 2007 through December 18, 2009, and are fitted with Ricon Public Use Lifts.
The recall addresses a defect in the lift's restraint belt. The belt is designed to prevent the lift from moving unless the tongue is fully engaged and latched in the buckle. However, it is possible for an operator to insert the belt tongue into the buckle without fully engaging the latching mechanism. In this scenario, the belt appears latched, allowing the operator to run the lift. If the belt is not fully engaged and latched, the lift may operate with an occupant on the platform, which could result in injury.
Startrans is working with Ricon to perform the remedy for this campaign. Ricon will provide customers with a warning decal and a DVD-based training aid. The safety recall began on July 12, 2010. Owners may contact Ricon at 1-818-267-3000 or Startrans Bus at 1-574-642-0811 for more information.
