Plain-English summary
Restoration Hardware Inc. is recalling approximately 12,000 Sock Monkey stuffed animals in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall is necessary because sewing needles or pins have been found in the stuffing of these toys, which presents a laceration hazard.
The affected monkeys are 16 to 20 inches tall, made of brown tweed-like knit fabric with white hands and feet, red lips, black felt eyes, and a red patch under the tail. They feature brown tweed and white knit caps and do not contain buttons or plastic parts. Restoration Hardware sold these items through its stores, catalogs, and website from October 1997 through May 1999 for approximately $29. The monkeys were produced both domestically and overseas.
CPSC and Restoration Hardware are aware of one injury involving an 18-month-old girl in Utah who received a needle stick on her lip. Additionally, the company found 17 more monkeys containing needles or pins in store inventory. Consumers should return the monkeys to any Restoration Hardware store for a refund and a discount merchandise certificate. Catalog purchasers will be contacted directly by the company.
