Toro Recalls Lawn-Boy Power Mowers Due to Blade Breakage Hazard
Toro is recalling approximately 78,000 Lawn-Boy power mowers because the mulching fan can interfere with the blade, causing it to crack and break off.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (bruised tendon), but no serious injuries or deaths are documented, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for products with reported but non-severe injuries.
Plain-English summary
The Toro Co. is recalling approximately 78,000 Lawn-Boy Silver Series, Four Cycle, walk-behind, 21-inch power mowers in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall involves specific model and serial number combinations, which are printed on a decal on the right rear of the mower.
The hazard exists because interference with the mower's mulching fan can cause the mower blade to crack and break off. Broken pieces of the blade can be propelled from underneath the mower, potentially injuring the operator or a bystander. Toro has received one report of a consumer who was struck on the ankle by a piece of a broken mower blade, resulting in a bruised tendon.
These mowers were sold by Lawn-Boy dealers and mass merchant retail outlets, including Sears, Lowe's, and the Home Depot, from January 1997 through November 1998 for between $280 and $400. Consumers should stop using these recalled mowers immediately. The company is mailing free repair kits, which include a new mower blade and a modified mulching fan, to consumers who sent in their registration cards. Consumers who have not been notified should contact their local Lawn-Boy service dealer for assistance or call Lawn-Boy at (800) 444-8676.
