The recall is necessary because the cleats could pull out of the sole, which could cause a cyclist's foot to slip off the pedal and lead to an injury. Cannondale has received about 35 reports of cleats pulling out of the soles, and some minor injuries have been reported.

The recalled shoes are multi-color, adult-sizes only, and were sold at Cannondale dealers nationwide from early 1997 through April 1997 for between $59.99 and $79.99 a pair. The cleats are selected by the consumer based on their bicycle pedal system and are fitted to the shoe by the dealer.

Consumers should contact their Cannondale dealer for a free upgrade. Dealers will install a thin metal backing plate inside the shoe, under the insole, to provide a firmer attachment for the cleat. Consumers can also call Cannondale toll-free at 800-BIKE-USA with any questions or to find the nearest dealer.
