CPSC Recalls 900,000 Plastic Lawn Chairs Due to Collapse Risk
CPSC and Southern Sales and Marketing Group are recalling 900,000 plastic lawn chairs because the rear legs may spread or break, causing the chair to collapse.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect causing collapse with reported injuries (back injuries), fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has been reported but no fatalities or severe structural vehicle defects are present.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Southern Sales and Marketing Group of Atlanta, Ga., are voluntarily recalling 900,000 plastic lawn chairs. The affected products include the "Perla," "Althea," and "Malibu" styles of white plastic lawn chairs. These chairs measure 22 inches deep, 22 inches wide, and 32 inches high. Each chair bears a sticker label on the front of the seat listing the style and manufacturer's name and address.
The recall is due to a defect where the chair's rear legs lack rubber feet. This defect may cause the legs to spread or break, resulting in the chair collapsing. Southern Sales and Marketing Group is aware of 39 incidents involving these chairs, which resulted in several injuries ranging from minor bruises to back injuries. The 1996 styles of these chairs, which feature rubber feet on the rear legs, are not included in the recall.
The chairs were sold nationwide from January 1992 through September 1995 for approximately $6. Retailers included grocery and home supply stores such as Winn Dixie, Cub Foods, and Scotty's. Consumers should stop using the recalled lawn chairs immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund or replacement. For more information, consumers can contact Southern Sales and Marketing Group at (800) 729-5033.
