Allibert Recalls Canasta and Corolia Multi-Position Resin Patio Chairs
Allibert Inc. is recalling approximately 5,600 Canasta and Corolia multi-position resin patio chairs because the seat and back may not lock in position, posing a risk of collapse.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (structural collapse) where injuries have been reported in England (broken arm), but no injuries have been reported in the U.S. This aligns with the rubric for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported' in the primary jurisdiction, or high-risk structural defects.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Allibert Inc. of Huntsville, N.C., announced the recall of approximately 5,600 "Canasta" and "Corolia" multi-position resin patio chairs. The recall was issued because the seat and back of these chairs may not lock or remain locked in position as intended, which could cause the chair to break or collapse during use.
Allibert Inc. was aware of 33 incidents of chairs collapsing in the United States. Although no injuries were reported in the U.S., the company was aware of three injuries that occurred in England, with the most severe being a broken arm. The chairs were sold individually and as part of a patio furniture set in white, green, and gray granite. Canasta chairs (model number 42216) have mesh seat backs, while Corolia chairs (model number 42166) have backs composed of nine vertical slats. The chairs were distributed from October 1994 to September 1995 in retail stores primarily in the northeastern United States and can be identified by the name Allibert Inc. labeled on the cross bar of the front legs.
Because the manufacturer is out of business and cannot be contacted, consumers are advised to destroy or discard the product.
