Bemis Manufacturing is recalling about 5,000 Grand Sequoia plastic lawn chairs that may collapse unexpectedly due to shipment damage, causing minor injuries.
What this means for you
Minor labeling or packaging issue, or a voluntary precautionary recall. Risk of harm is low but real — follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (collapse) that resulted in minor injuries, fitting the Moderate category for low-risk contamination or minor labeling errors, though the injury report elevates it above Low.
Plain-English summary
Bemis Manufacturing Co. of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., is recalling about 5,000 plastic lawn chairs in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The chairs sustained damage during shipment, which caused them to collapse unexpectedly while in use. Bemis has received four reports of chairs collapsing, resulting in minor injuries.
The affected products are five-position folding recliners with an extra-wide seat measuring about 22 inches. They are available in white, green, and taupe and were sold under the Grand Sequoia brand name. The model number "2068" is embossed on the underside of the seat. Department stores nationwide, including Sears and Costco, sold the chairs from January 1998 through June 1998 for about $40.
Consumers should stop using these lawn chairs immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, consumers should contact Bemis Manufacturing at (800) 558-7651 and request customer service.
