Plain-English summary

Dewalt Industrial Tool Co. is recalling approximately 150,000 DW9104 and DW9106 one-hour battery chargers in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall is necessary because the charger's plastic housing could separate during a severe impact, exposing internal electrical components that present an electric shock hazard. Dewalt has not received any reports of the charger breaking or injuries involving the charger; the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.

The recalled chargers are identified by having both the top and bottom halves of the housing in black, a date code between 9534 and 9615 stamped on the bottom, and a circular depression 1-3/8 inches in diameter under the center of the label on the top. The chargers measure approximately five inches deep, three inches high, and four inches wide, and feature a label on top with yellow lettering that reads in part, "DEWALT." No other Dewalt Tool chargers are involved in this recall.

Hardware stores and home centers sold the chargers nationwide between August 1995 and April 1996 for between $39 and $59. During the same period, the chargers were also sold in kits with some rechargeable cordless tools. Owners of the identified chargers should return them to a Black & Decker/Dewalt Service Center for a free replacement one-hour battery charger. To locate the nearest service center or for more information, owners should call (800) 540-2626.
