Girvin Carbon Fiber Mountain Bike Forks Recalled for Cracking Risk

Girvin Incorporated is voluntarily recalling 120 Thermoplastic Carbon Fiber Girvin CL Suspension Forks in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The forks, which have legs manufactured by Applied Fiber Systems (AFS), may crack or separate. This defect could cause a rider to lose control of the bicycle and fall.

Girvin has received four reports of forks breaking, but the CPSC is not aware of any injuries associated with the product. The recalled forks are lightweight and black with white "Girvin" decals on each leg and yellow drop-outs. They have serial numbers between 039297 and 040478 stamped on the bottom of the top fork link.

Authorized Girvin dealers sold these forks nationwide from March 1996 through June 1996 as after-market equipment for $599. Consumers who own bicycles with these defective forks should stop using them immediately and call Girvin Incorporated Technical Services at (800) 447-3824, extension 316. Girvin will provide a free set of aluminum legs until replacement carbon fiber legs are available.
