Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and four manufacturers are announcing the voluntary recall of approximately 21,000 mountain bike suspension forks. The affected products include Marzocchi XC50, XC51, XC250, XC400, and XC500 models; Girvin Fastrax forks on Proflex Arcadia 454/554; Specialized Bicycle Components Future Shock FS; and Answer Products Manitou 2 and M Sport forks. These forks connect the front wheel to the main frame of the bicycle.
The recall is being issued because the forks may crack, break, or separate in various locations depending on the make and model. Specifically, Marzocchi fork crowns may break or fracture; Girvin forks may lose steering due to adhesive failure; Specialized stanchion tubes may separate from the fork crown; and Answer Products fork crowns may crack or break. Since the summer of 1994, CPSC has received at least 25 reports of bike accidents involving these defects, resulting in 8 injuries.
Consumers should stop using bicycles equipped with these suspension forks immediately. Owners are urged to contact the manufacturer or a local authorized dealer to receive instructions for repairing or replacing the forks.
