What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a bicycle component that can cause loss of control and falls, with five reported injuries (cuts, bruises, scrapes) but no reports of serious injury or death, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has been reported but is not severe.
Plain-English summary
Answer Products Inc. of Valencia, California, is voluntarily recalling 69,000 Manitou Mach 5 mountain bike suspension forks in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall was announced on April 30, 1996.
The recalled forks can crack and break, which may cause the front wheel to separate from the bicycle. This defect can result in riders losing control of the bicycle and falling. Answer Products has received 49 reports of the forks cracking, and five consumers sustained injuries including cuts, bruises, and scrapes.
The recalled forks feature both Manitou and Mach 5 logos on the sides of the lower legs. The serial number is located on the back of the lower part of the fork leg. Consumers should stop using the forks immediately and contact Answer Products at 888.MTN.DISC (888.686.3472) or [email protected] for instructions. Consumers can also return the fork to the store where it was purchased for a free replacement. Forks with red dots on the inside of the drop out have been inspected and are not subject to this recall.
