What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fall hazard due to loss of control) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Answer Products, Inc. is recalling approximately 8,032 Manitou bicycle suspension forks, including the 2005 Nixon, Stance, and Sherman models. These forks were installed on various high-end mountain bicycles and sold by retailers and distributors from July 2004 through September 2004 for over $1,000.

The recall is being conducted because the top of the Manitou bicycle suspension fork, when fully compressed, may contact the front tire. This contact can result in a loss of control of the bicycle, presenting a fall hazard to the bicyclist. One report of a Manitou Stance allowing the tire to rub against the top of the fork has been received, but no injuries have been reported.

Consumers should check the back of the lower leg portion of the fork for a decal stating "Tire Clearance Upgrade Installed." If the decal is absent, consumers should stop using the bicycle immediately and contact Answer Products to arrange for a free travel upgrade kit to be installed at no cost. Consumers should also discard the old Owners' Manual and contact Answer Products to receive a free replacement manual.
