Performance Inc. of Chapel Hill, N.C., is voluntarily recalling about 5,000 bicycles in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recalled bicycles are equipped with defective PM-215 seat posts manufactured by Polygon Industries Corp. of Taiwan, R.O.C. The defect involves a clamp bolt under the seat post that can break or fracture, which could cause riders to lose control of the bicycle and be seriously injured.

The affected models are X203, X204, M603, M604, M704, and M705. These bicycles were sold nationwide through Performance bicycle stores and the Performance mail order catalog from March 1993 through April 1996 for between $300 and $500. Performance has received five reports of the seat posts failing, resulting in minor injuries, including cuts and bruises.

Consumers should stop using the bicycles immediately. They can call Performance's Technical Department at (800) 553-8324 or return the bicycles to the nearest Performance Bicycle Shop, where the seat post clamp bolt will be replaced free-of-charge.
