Mascot Electronic A.S. is recalling 65,800 ACH-4U cellular phone chargers sold as Nokia and AT&T brands because the plastic cover may crack, causing plug prongs to break off and pose an electrical shock hazard.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of electrical shock (electrocution) from a consumer product, but the source explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, fitting the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Mascot Electronic A.S. of Fredrikstad, Norway, is recalling 65,800 ACH-4U cellular phone chargers used with Nokia cellular phones in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The chargers were sold nationwide from July 1995 to November 1995 under the brand names Nokia and AT&T. They were sold by various cellular phone dealers as part of basic sales packages or separately as accessories.
The recall is being conducted because the charger's plastic cover may crack, which can cause the plug prongs on the back of the charger to become loose. If the prongs loosen and break off while the charger is plugged in, they can become lodged in electrical outlets. Consumers could receive an electrical shock if they attempt to remove the separated prongs from the outlets. The affected chargers are rectangular, black, plastic units measuring approximately 3 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, and 1 inch tall, with grooves on the side. Labels on the chargers include "Made in Norway," the model number, and a date code. This recall applies only to ACH-4U chargers with date codes 9531 through 9546.
Nokia is not aware of any injuries involving this product. Consumers who own a model ACH-4U charger should stop using it immediately and call Nokia at (800) 204-2567. Nokia will help consumers identify whether their chargers are part of the recall and provide a free replacement charger if they are.
