The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Torpedo, Inc. are voluntarily recalling certain "Dolphin Baby Float" baby flotation devices. The recall addresses a hazard where water can leak into the hollow center of the float's inner tube, causing the device to tip over and potentially allowing a child sitting in it to drown.

Approximately 18,000 of these dolphin-shaped flotation devices were sold nationwide through catalogs and retail stores between February 1993 and December 1994. The devices measure about 37 inches from nose to tail and feature a detachable red umbrella and blue nylon seat. CPSC and the manufacturer are aware of 24 non-injury complaints regarding the product, including 11 tip-over incidents. No injuries or deaths have been reported in connection with this recall.

Consumers with affected products should destroy their defective Dolphin Baby Floats. Because Torpedo went out of business in 2003, free replacements are no longer available. CPSC reminds consumers that adults should never leave a baby in water without constant supervision, as flotation devices do not prevent drowning.
