HydraBaths is recalling whirlpool bath suction covers manufactured before 1985 due to a risk of hair entrapment that can cause drowning.
What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 5/5 (Critical).
Highest-severity recall. The hazard can cause serious injury or death. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that one reported incident resulted in a drowning death. Per the rubric, if reported deaths exist anywhere in the source text, the score is 5 regardless of other factors.
Plain-English summary
HydraBaths Inc. is voluntarily recalling model 20313X, 2031XX, and 203 whirlpool bath suction covers. These covers were manufactured prior to the implementation of voluntary industry standards in 1985. HydraBaths estimates that approximately 40,000 whirlpool baths in use have these suction covers. The recalled covers were sold nationally before 1985 to bathtub manufacturers, plumbing wholesalers, and distributors.
The recalled suction covers were not designed to protect against the entrapment of a bather's body parts or hair due to high suction forces. This design flaw may entangle a bather's hair into the openings, holding the head underwater and potentially resulting in drowning. To date, HydraBaths has received two reports of hair entrapment: one resulted in a drowning death, and the other was a near-drowning.
Consumers should stop using whirlpools with the recalled suction covers immediately. The recalled round covers can be identified by holes that are slotted or square-shaped and larger than 1/8 inch; they have no visible model markings. Covers distributed after 1985 are not involved and can be identified by visible markings HB-8, SC-1, or SC-4 and circular holes 1/8 inch or smaller. Consumers can contact HydraBaths at (714) 556-9133 or write to the Recall Department at 2100 S. Fairview, Santa Ana, CA 92704 for free replacement covers.
