The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling approximately 39,600 GF1812 Ground Fault Interrupter extension cords manufactured by Columbia Wire and Cable Corporation. These white, 12-foot cords were sold in 1992 for $3.99 each by Consolidated Stores Corporation from its Odd Lots/Big Lots retail outlet stores in the midwestern and southeastern United States. The cords are identified by a red "RESET" button on the plug, specific embossed warning labels, and the text "Cat. No. 6575, E-96425" on the bottom of the plug.
The recall is due to a potential electric shock or electrocution hazard. The extension cords were advertised to have a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), but they actually contain a built-in immersion detection circuit interrupter (IDCI) plug. An IDCI plug does not provide protection from severe electric shock or electrocution if a short circuit or ground fault occurs. Additionally, the IDCI plug does not provide water immersion shock protection for two-wire appliances because the sensor wire is not connected, and the cord may create a shock hazard when connected to three-wire electrically grounded appliances such as metal drills or circular saws. No reports of electric shock or injury have been reported to the manufacturer or retailer to date.
Consumers should stop using the GF1812 Ground Fault Interrupter extension cords immediately. Those who purchased the cords from Odd Lots/Big Lots stores may return them to any Odd Lots/Big Lots store for a full refund. Consumers who purchased the cords from other retailers should stop using them, contact the retailer, and call CPSC at (800) 638-2772 to assist in identifying other distribution channels. Approximately 14,000 units are unaccounted for and may have been sold by unidentified retailers.
