Nelson Weather-Rite, Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 14,400 American Camper NY90 Rope Hammocks. The recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on April 12, 1994. The affected hammocks are described as 90 by 48 inches with heavy-duty, knotted cotton ropes and 49-inch wooden spreader bars.
The product has a defect where the cotton ropes stretch, which loosens the twine binding that secures the rope in a loop around the rings at the end of the hammock. This allows the ropes to work loose from the rings, causing the hammock to drop to the ground. Nelson Weather-Rite has received 5 reported incidents of the hammock collapsing, resulting in 5 minor injuries to users, including sprains to the lower back, elbow, and forearm, and abrasions to various parts of the body.
The hammocks were sold nationwide in retail stores from February 1992 to October 1993. Consumers should stop using the hammocks and return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
