Montgomery Ward & Co., Incorporated is recalling high gloss, tubular metal frame children's bunk beds, model number 66-72995, manufactured by Yu Wei, Inc. between 1990 and 1991. The affected beds are sold in red or white and feature a twin-size mattress on the top bunk and a full-size mattress on the bottom bunk. Bunk beds with a center, fifth leg on the lower full-size bed portion are not affected.

The recall is due to a risk of collapse. The bunk beds may develop cracks in the welds and collapse during use, which could result in injury to occupants. Out of approximately 13,000 beds sold, 17 reports of welds breaking have been received, including eight reports of alleged injury.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected beds. Because the firm is out of business, there is no remedy available; consumers are advised to discard or destroy these products. CPSC is also investigating other metal bunk beds and urges consumers to inspect all mattress support corners for breaks or cracks.
