Coaster Company Recalls Tubular Metal Children's Bunk Beds Due to Collapse Risk

Approximately 13,500 units were distributed in retail stores nationwide from May 1992 through December 1992, selling for approximately $139 to $199 each.
The recall is issued because the upper level of the bunk beds may fall, causing the entire structure to collapse. This collapse could result in injury to an occupant on the bed. The company has received eight reports of these beds breaking, including one report of an injury. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is also investigating other importers and manufacturers of metal bunk beds that may present similar risks, noting over 300 industry-wide complaints of defective bunk beds.
Consumers should immediately stop using the affected beds as bunk beds. To determine if they have an affected Coaster bed, consumers should contact their retailer for information on the importer or manufacturer. Those with affected beds should call Coaster Company toll-free at (800) 221-9699 to obtain a free repair kit, replacement of the mattress support frame, or a replacement of the bed. CPSC urges all consumers to inspect the eight mattress support corners of all metal bunk beds for breaks or cracks in the paint and metal around the weld and to stop using any damaged beds.
