Plain-English summary
The L. Powell Company, Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 23,400 distinctive C-shaped tubular metal frame children's bunk beds. These beds, models 440 (red), 446 (white), 447 (blue), and 448 (black), were distributed to stores nationwide from June 1992 through March 31, 1993. The beds feature a twin-size mattress on the top bunk and a full-size mattress on the bottom bunk, with C-shaped headboard and footboard frames. A large percentage of these units were sold by Pace Membership Warehouse, Inc. and Costco Wholesale.
The recall is issued because the upper bunk on these beds may unexpectedly collapse, usually after squeaking or creaking sounds. Bed occupants could be injured by the falling upper bunk. The company has received 36 reports of these specific beds collapsing, including five reports of injury. This action follows a CPSC bunk bed industry safety alert and an ongoing investigation into similar metal bunk beds.
Consumers should immediately stop using the bed as a bunk bed. The bed may be used temporarily if both bunks are placed on the floor. Consumers should inspect all eight mattress support corners for breaks or cracks in the metal or paint around the welds. Those with affected beds made before April 1993 should call L. Powell Company at (310) 204-2224, weekdays between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, to receive a free corner kit designed to reinforce the bed and prevent collapse.
