What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (iron poisoning) where injury has not yet been reported for this specific item, fitting the High severity criteria for theoretical but serious hazards.
Plain-English summary
Enzymatic Therapy, Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 4,435 bottles of "Fem-Plus" nutritional supplements for women. The recalled products were sold in white, opaque plastic bottles with blue screw-on plastic caps between June 1, 1991, and August 2, 1993. Each bottle contains 60 capsules with 25 milligrams of iron per capsule.
The recall is necessary because the recalled bottles lack the child-resistant packaging required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act for products with this level of iron content. Without this safety feature, a child could easily open the bottle and ingest too much iron, which can lead to serious illness or death. The recall applies only to bottles with blue conventional screw caps and does not include products with white child-resistant caps or other iron-containing products from the manufacturer.
Neither Enzymatic Therapy nor the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of any poisoning incidents specifically due to the recalled Fem-Plus capsules. However, CPSC notes that the National Association of Poison Control Centers has reported several ingestions and at least 25 deaths since 1990 from other iron-containing products. Consumers should return unused portions of the recalled bottles to the place of purchase for a replacement or full refund, or call 1-800-783-2286 for more information.
