The product was sold nationwide in retail health food and nutrition stores between July 1, 1992, and July 31, 1993. Each bottle contains 90 light brown tablets, with each tablet containing five milligrams of iron. The product was promoted as a dietary supplement for children over four years of age.
The recall is due to the product not being sold in child-resistant packaging as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. This lack of packaging means a child could easily access and accidentally swallow the iron tablets. Each bottle contains enough iron that, if consumed by a child at one time, it could cause serious illness requiring hospitalization. The product was also wrongly labeled "Non-Toxic." Neither the manufacturer nor the CPSC is aware of any poisoning incidents involving this specific brand, though the CPSC notes that other iron-containing products have been associated with ingestions and deaths in children under five.
Consumers should immediately return unused portions of the recalled Vitabots to the store where purchased for a refund. The recall does not include any other iron-containing products manufactured by International Vitamin Corp.
