Solgar Company, Inc. is voluntarily recalling five iron-containing dietary supplement products: Natural Amino Acid Chelated Iron, Gentle Iron Vegicaps, Hematinic Formula, Prenatal Nutrients, and Trace Elements. Approximately 17,500 bottles of these products were sold in brown glass bottles with yellow screw-on caps between January 1, 1993, and mid-April 1993. The products were distributed through health food and nutrition stores nationwide.

The recall is due to a violation of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, as the products were not packaged in child-resistant containers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) notes that the lack of child-resistant packaging means a child could easily access and swallow the iron tablets or capsules. Each bottle contains enough iron that accidental consumption by a child could cause serious illness or death. While no poisoning incidents have been reported specifically for these Solgar products, the CPSC is aware of at least 11 deaths in 1991 from other iron-containing products.

Consumers should immediately return the unused portions of any recalled bottles to the store where purchased or directly to Solgar Co., Inc. at 410 Ocean Avenue, Lynbrook, NY 11563, Attention: Recall, for a complete refund of the purchase price plus postage. This recall does not include other Solgar iron products or versions of these products packaged with child-resistant white plastic push-and-turn caps.
