General Nutrition Corporation (GNC) is voluntarily recalling 100-tablet bottles of "Vita-Worth" brand iron tablets. The tablets are packaged in white plastic bottles with standard screw-on caps rather than the child-resistant closures required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The recall does not include 60-tablet bottles, which have child-resistant packaging.

The lack of child-resistant closures means a child could accidentally swallow the tablets. The recall notice states that just eight or ten tablets consumed by a child at one time can cause serious illness or death. Approximately 22,000 bottles were sold to consumers between July 1, 1992, and October 31, 1992, through GNC's company-owned and franchisee-owned retail stores nationwide.

Neither GNC nor the CPSC is aware of any poisoning incidents specifically due to these Vita-Worth tablets. However, the CPSC notes that the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported several ingestions and at least 11 deaths in 1991 from iron-containing products. Consumers should immediately return the recalled iron tablets to the store where purchased for a refund.
