What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a high-risk product (children's bunk beds) with reports of alleged injury, but no confirmed fatalities or FDA Class I classification, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products.

Plain-English summary

Southern Enterprises, Inc. (SEI) is voluntarily recalling approximately 6,000 high gloss, tubular metal frame children's bunk beds. The affected models are BB-104-2 (red), BB-105-2 (white), BB-106-2 (blue), and BB-107-2 (black). These beds were sold in retail stores nationwide from January 1990 to the date of the recall announcement. The beds feature a twin-size mattress on the top bunk and either a twin or full-size mattress on the bottom bunk, with rectangular mattress support side rails measuring 3/4-inch by 1-1/2 inches.

The recall is due to a defect where the upper level of the bunk bed may unexpectedly fall, causing the bed to collapse. This failure can result in injury to bed occupants. SEI has received approximately 15 reports of these beds breaking, which includes 6 reports of alleged injury.

Consumers should immediately stop using the affected beds as bunk beds. To determine if a bed is affected, consumers should contact the retailer for information on the importer or manufacturer. Owners of affected SEI beds should call the company toll-free at (800) 633-5096 to obtain a free retrofit kit that reinforces the upper bunk at the corner joints. The CPSC is also investigating other metal bunk beds and urges consumers to inspect all metal bunk beds for breaks or cracks in the paint or metal around the welds.
