Kmart Recalls Candoliers Holiday Electric Candle Decorations for Shock and Fire Hazards

Kmart is recalling Candoliers holiday electric candle decorations sold in 1992 due to improper wiring and contact tabs that pose shock, burn, and fire risks.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (improper wiring/short circuit) that poses a risk of fire and thermal burns, with one reported incident of slight burns, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Kmart is recalling Candoliers holiday electric candle decorations, manufactured by Willis Mfg. and sold during the 1992 Christmas season. The affected products include single-light and three-light units. The recall covers approximately 72,000 three-light units and 292,400 single-light units.

The products are improperly wired, which could cause an electric shock hazard. Additionally, the three-light units may have improperly aligned metal contact tabs that can immediately short circuit. If the household circuit breaker or fuse does not trip, this short circuit could result in a fire, thermal burn, or electric shock. Kmart reported two incidents to the CPSC involving three-light units, one of which resulted in slight burns to a consumer's hand when the cord caught fire.

Consumers should discontinue use of these products immediately and not attempt to repair them. Affected units can be returned to any Kmart store for a full refund or replacement.
