CPSC Recalls Holiday Time Candle Gift Sets Due to Fire Hazard

CPSC and Wal-Mart are recalling Holiday Time candle gift sets because the decorative covering can ignite, posing a fire and burn hazard.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with reported property damage, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' under the Severe category.

Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Wal-Mart are recalling Holiday Time™ Candle Gift Sets. The recall involves two types of sets: one with three birch bark-covered candles on a stand with pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and red berries, and another with three pyramid-shaped candles (blue with silver glitter or red with gold glitter) on a display stand. The candles were manufactured by Dan Dee International Ltd. of Jersey City, N.J., and imported from China.

The decorative covering on the candles can ignite, posing a fire and burn hazard. Wal-Mart has received six reports of the candles catching fire. Two of these incidents resulted in approximately $6,200 in property damage, and another incident resulted in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

About 48,000 units were sold at Wal-Mart stores nationwide from September 2004 through January 2005 for about $10. Consumers should immediately stop using the candles and return them to Wal-Mart for a full refund. For additional information, consumers can contact Dan Dee International at (800) 477-8697 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit Wal-Mart's website.
