Plain-English summary

Kmart Corp. is recalling about 41,300 Basic Editions Lily Table Lamps in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The lamps, which measure 15 1/4 inches high and feature a bronze-colored metal base shaped like a lily pad with two frosted white shades, can short circuit and ignite, creating a fire hazard.

Kmart has received 12 reports of the lamps short circuiting. Five of these incidents resulted in fire, causing minor damage to various household items. The company is not aware of any injuries involving the lamps. The lamps were sold nationwide in Kmart stores from November 1996 through April 1997 for about $20. The packaging is labeled "Basic Editions...Lily Table Lamp...Style R8831...UL Listed..." and a gold sticker on the bottom of the lamp reads "Made in China."

Consumers should stop using the lamps immediately and return them to any Kmart store for a full refund. For more information, consumers can call Kmart at (800) 63K-MART or visit Kmart's website.
