Yazoo Manufacturing Company, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is issuing a warning regarding its commercial "high wheel" gasoline-powered walk-behind lawn mowers. The affected models, manufactured beginning in 1982, include S22B, P22B, P22W, S22W, S24B, P24B, P24W, S24W, S26B, and S26W. These mowers are not equipped with a blade control device that stops the blade within three seconds after release of the controls, a requirement for consumer mowers under CPSC safety standards. As a result, consumers may be injured from contact with the rotating mower blade.
The mowers were sold to retailers in the southern, southeastern, and northeastern United States with a suggested retail price between $750.00 and $900.00. Although intended primarily for commercial operators, Yazoo and the CPSC are concerned that some may have been purchased by consumers for personal use. Neither the CPSC nor the company is aware of any consumer injuries resulting from the lack of a blade control device.
Yazoo is no longer in the mower business, and repairs are no longer available. The company is developing a retrofit kit consisting of a blade brake and engine-stopping device to meet safety requirements. This retrofit will cover only mowers purchased by consumers for personal use, excluding those for industrial, commercial, or professional use. Consumers who purchased these mowers should use them only with extreme caution until the retrofit is available.
