What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a risk of electrocution, which is a high-risk hazard, but the source explicitly states that no electric shock incidents have been reported, fitting the rubric for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
The Toro Company is modifying an estimated 7,500 Vision II Series Irrigation Controllers housed in metal cabinets to ensure proper electrical grounding. The affected models are 189-66-01, 189-96-01, and 189-06-01. These controllers were sold and installed nationwide for home and light commercial use from September 1989 through December 1990.
The metal cabinets of these controllers may not have been electrically grounded when installed. Under certain conditions, non-insulated metal parts, including the key lock, could become electrically energized, presenting a severe electric shock or electrocution hazard. No electric shock incidents have been reported to date.
Owners of Vision II Series Irrigation Controllers with metal cabinets who have not been contacted by Toro or their contractor should call Toro at 1-800-367-8676 (or 1-800-255-8676 in California) to arrange for the free installation of a modification kit. Owners should not touch the key lock or cabinet until the modification is completed. Controllers with gray or tan plastic cabinets are not part of this program.
