What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking hazard from small parts in a toy for young children, which fits the rubric criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Lionel Leisure, Inc. is voluntarily recalling the Big Bird Trike (Model #8820R) in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The toy, manufactured by Illco Toy Company, Inc., features small screws beneath the Big Bird character's feet. These screws are small parts that may separate from the toy, creating a choking or aspiration hazard for young children.
Approximately 3,000 units were sold between June 1989 and January 1990 for approximately $9.00 each. The trikes were sold in Lionel Kiddie City, Lionel Playworld, and Lionel Toy Warehouse stores. The toys are blue with green wheels, feature a bright yellow Big Bird with orange legs, and are marked "Made in Macau." No injuries have been reported to CPSC or Lionel Leisure.
Consumers are urged to take the toys away from young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund of the purchase price. Those with questions can contact Lionel Leisure at (215) 671-3800.
