What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a choking hazard from small parts in a toy marketed for infants (6 months and up), which fits the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'
Plain-English summary
Toys R Us is recalling Animal Voices Musical Toys, Model 670508B, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall is necessary because the toys contain small metal noisemakers and springs that detach when the toys are dropped. These small parts present a choking hazard, particularly for children younger than 3 years old, for whom such parts are prohibited in toys to meet CPSC safety requirements.
The affected toys are cardboard cylinders measuring 1-3/4 inches long by 1-5/8 inches in diameter. One end is metal with holes, while the other is covered with green paper printed with the word "TAIWAN." The sides feature pictures of animals, and tilting the cylinder produces a noise resembling a baby animal. The toys were packaged in pairs on a pink card labeled "RECOMMENDED FOR AGES 6 MONTHS AND UP" and distributed by Lash Distributors in Rochelle Park, New Jersey.
Approximately 56,500 of these toys were imported from Taiwan and sold nationwide through Toys R Us stores from April 1985 to December 1986 for approximately $1.48 each. Although CPSC and Toys R Us have not received reports of any injuries or deaths involving this toy, consumers are advised to take the toys away from children immediately. Consumers can return the toys to any Toys R Us store for a full refund of the purchase price.
