Plain-English summary
Come Play Products Company is voluntarily recalling approximately 100,000 children's brooms imported from Hungary and sold nationwide through variety stores since 1960. The recall is due to paint on the broom handles containing an excess of lead, which exceeds CPSC regulations that limit lead in paint on consumer products to 0.06%. The affected brooms are approximately 28 inches long with natural straw bristles and red-painted handles stamped with the word "HUNGARY" in gold-colored letters. This recall does not apply to brooms with plastic handles and plastic bristles.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of one incident involving a child who ingested paint from a broom handle, though the agency could not conclusively attribute the child's elevated blood lead level to the toy. If a child gnaws or sucks on an article coated with lead-containing paint and ingests the paint, the lead can enter the child's bloodstream.
Teachers and parents are urged to remove these brooms from use immediately. Consumers should either discard the brooms or return them to the retailer where purchased for a refund. Retailers are instructed to remove the brooms from shelves and return them to Come Play Products Company in Worcester, Massachusetts.
