Plain-English summary
Granada Electronics Inc. is voluntarily recalling its Model M400 Omnidirectional CB base station antennas in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall involves approximately 2,000 antennas distributed nationwide. The product consists of 14 sections of aluminum tubing forming two three-legged tripods on a mast.
The antennas are being recalled because they failed to comply with the CPSC's mandatory safety standard and labeling requirements. Specifically, the products lack required warnings about the electrocution hazard and instructions for safe installation. If the antennas contact an electrical power line during installation or removal, there is a potential for severe or fatal shock. The CPSC is not aware of any injuries or deaths involving the Model M400 antennas, though it estimates about 500 antenna-related electrocutions have occurred since 1976 due to similar hazards.
Consumers who have already installed the M400 antennas should leave them in place and not attempt to remove them. These consumers can obtain a warning hang tag to place on the product by contacting Granada Electronics Inc. at 718-387-1156 or writing to 485 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Consumers who have not yet installed the antennas should return them to the dealer for a full refund. Retailers with the model in stock should return them to Granada Electronics for replacement.
